The Museum is run by a group of volunteers who would welcome new colleagues as the Museum expands. If you live in the Lake District, have spare time and think you could help to run the Shop, take Underground Tours or help in any way on site, we'd love to hear from you. You'll find it a very friendly place with lovely views and it would be entirely up to you how much time you give. If you think you might be interested, please call Ian Hartland in the evening on 01768779202
SIR TOM working at Threlkeld Quarry and Mining Museum for the first time in July, 2006, driven by Ian Hartland. Built by Bagnall of Stafford in 1926 and named after Sir Tom Callender, this 0-4-0 saddletank narrow gauge loco worked at British Insulated Callender Cables, Kent, until 1968. After lying idle for thirtythree years, it arrived at Threlkeld in 2001, and since then has undergone complete restoration. Starting in 2007, it will be used to haul passenger trains into the inner quarry. SIR TOM passed its final boiler inspection with flying colours and all that remains to be done are a few adjustments to the track, completion of the two platforms and the final track inspection in time for the 2007 season.
